The key chemical, commercial, and application differences between Ceylon cinnamon bark oil and cinnamon leaf oil — what flavour houses, cosmetic manufacturers, and private label brands need to know before sourcing.
Two Oils from One Tree
The Ceylon cinnamon tree (Cinnamomum verum, formerly C. zeylanicum) yields two commercially distinct essential oils that are frequently confused by first-time buyers: bark oil and leaf oil. They are chemically different, priced differently, and suited to entirely different applications. Ordering the wrong grade is a costly formulation mistake for flavour houses, cosmetic manufacturers, and private label brands.
Chemical Composition: The Core Difference
The dominant active compound in each oil determines its properties, fragrance character, and regulatory status:
- Ceylon Cinnamon Bark Oil — Primary constituent: trans-cinnamaldehyde (55–75%). Secondary: eugenol (2–5%), linalool (1–3%). The oil carries the intense, sweet-spicy cinnamon character most closely associated with the spice. Cinnamaldehyde content correlates directly with flavour impact, warm top-note presence, and documented antimicrobial activity.
- Ceylon Cinnamon Leaf Oil — Primary constituent: eugenol (70–90%). Secondary: cinnamaldehyde (trace, <3%), β-caryophyllene (2–4%). The fragrance is warmer, more clove-like, and less "cinnamon-sweet" than bark oil. The high eugenol content makes it relevant for dental, pharmaceutical, soap, and certain flavour applications.
Price Difference and What It Means for Sourcing
Ceylon cinnamon bark oil commands a significant premium over leaf oil — typically 8–12× the price per kilogram. The reason is yield: bark oil yield is approximately 0.5–1% by weight from dried bark, while leaf oil yield is substantially higher (0.7–2% from fresh leaves). The leaf is a byproduct of the quill-peeling process; the bark is the primary cultivated product.
For buyers, this pricing structure has direct formulation implications:
- Bark oil is the correct choice for premium flavour applications, high-end natural cosmetics, and pharmaceutical reference standards where cinnamaldehyde content matters.
- Leaf oil is cost-effective for aromatherapy blends, soap and detergent bases, cleaning product formulations, insect repellents, and any eugenol-forward application.
- Substituting leaf oil into a recipe formulated for bark oil will produce a measurably different sensory profile and different biological activity — it is not a drop-in substitution.
IFRA Regulatory Limits for Cosmetic Use
Both oils are regulated by IFRA (International Fragrance Association) due to skin sensitisation risk — cinnamaldehyde in bark oil and eugenol in leaf oil. Current IFRA 49th Amendment limits:
- Bark oil (cinnamaldehyde >50%) — Category 4 (fine fragrance): maximum 0.05% use level in leave-on skin products; Category 9 (rinse-off products): 0.2% maximum.
- Leaf oil (eugenol >70%) — Category 4: maximum 0.5% in leave-on products; Category 9: 1.6% maximum.
Both oils require a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and IFRA conformance certificate for cosmetic ingredient registration in the EU. Ceylon Aroma supplies both documents as standard with all commercial essential oil orders.
Batch Specification: What to Verify in the CoA
Request a Certificate of Analysis confirming these GC-verified parameters for each production batch:
- Bark oil specification: Clear to slightly yellow liquid; specific gravity 1.010–1.030; refractive index 1.570–1.590; cinnamaldehyde by GC ≥55%; eugenol by GC ≤10%
- Leaf oil specification: Yellow to brownish liquid; specific gravity 1.030–1.060; refractive index 1.528–1.540; eugenol by GC ≥72%; cinnamaldehyde by GC ≤3%
GC-MS identification of the full chemical profile is available on request for buyers requiring formulation-level traceability.
Minimum Order Quantities & Packaging
Both oils are packed in food-grade aluminium drums with nitrogen flush to prevent oxidation during transit and storage.
- Ceylon cinnamon bark oil: 1 kg sample / 5 kg commercial / 25 kg bulk drum
- Ceylon cinnamon leaf oil: 5 kg sample / 25 kg commercial / 100 kg bulk drum
